Bernalillo County is requesting $72.9 million in capital outlay funding for the 2026 legislative session to address public safety, housing, infrastructure and other countywide priorities.

The funding request combines major capital projects with investments tailored to each of the county’s five commission districts, officials said.

County commissioners are seeking $5 million to expand the Mesa del Sol Regional Outdoor Sports Complex, aiming to attract regional and national youth athletic tournaments.

Housing remains a top priority. The county is requesting $1 million to rehabilitate the El Centro and Seybold Village housing complexes, preserving affordable housing for residents with the greatest need.

Separately, the county is seeking $98.3 million in housing funding through House Bill 2 to continue its BernCo Builds Communities initiative. That funding would support new housing units, rental assistance vouchers and rapid rehousing programs.

The state Legislature and Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham awarded the county $61.5 million for housing in 2025. As of January 2026, 79% of those funds have been deployed for affordable housing projects, with the remainder expected to be invested by June 2026, according to county officials.

Infrastructure needs include $2.5 million for preventative maintenance and safety improvements to county-maintained roads.

The county is requesting $2.5 million to modernize medical, dental and mental health facilities at the Youth Services Center, which houses detained youth from across the state.

Public safety investments include $4 million for a new training center and crime prevention technology, aimed at improving response times and enhancing law enforcement coordination.

Other priorities include $1 million for courthouse improvements to enhance accessibility and safety, and $2 million to expand Animal Care Services facilities to address increased animal intake.
