A third officer under investigation for corruption within the Albuquerque Police Department’s DWI unit has resigned before being interviewed by internal investigators.

Harvey Johnson resigned on Wednesday. Gilbert Gallegos, an APD spokesperson, said he was scheduled to be interviewed for the internal investigation today.

Johnson is one of six APD officers who were put on administrative leave after news broke in mid-January that the FBI is investigating the DWI unit, a local defense attorney, Thomas Clear III and his paralegal Ricardo “Rick” Mendez. APD is doing its own internal investigation, lead by the commander of the Criminal Investigations Division, into possible corruption.

Lt. Justin Hunt — who served on the DWI unit from 2011 to 2014 and most recently was stationed in the Southeast Area Command — resigned on Feb. 7. Honorio Alba resigned on Feb. 29. Two others: Joshua Montaño and Nelson Ortiz remain on the force.

In mid-February, Cmdr. Mark Landavazo — who heads the Internal Affairs division — was also put on leave. He had served on the DWI unit from Dec 2008 to Dec 2013. And then three days later an Internal Affairs lieutenant — whose name has not been publicly released — was transferred to another division while the investigation continues.

Johnson joined APD in 2014, Gallegos said, and the DWI unit in 2021.

No charges have been filed against any of the officers.
