The Internal Investigation into the Albuquerque Police Department’s DWI unit has expanded to include a lieutenant in the Internal Affairs Division.

On Friday, an APD spokesperson said the department temporarily reassigned the lieutenant to another position within the department—the Operations Division. APD did not identify the lieutenant since he is on “investigative assignment” rather than on leave.

However, Gilbert Gallegos, an APD spokesperson, said the lieutenant has been with the department since 2017.

“Also, he is not currently accused of participating in the alleged DWI scheme being investigated by the FBI,” Gallegos said.

Since January 19, five other officers—including the commander of the Internal Affairs Division–have been put on administrative leave. One of them, Lt. Justin Hunt, has resigned.

The FBI is also investigating the officers along with defense attorney Thomas Clear. No one has been charged but federal agents searched homes and the attorney’s office.

In a press release Friday afternoon, Chief Harold Medina said the department “is committed to thoroughly investigating all allegations without bias.”

“We will leave no stone unturned with this investigation,” Medina said.

Commander Kyle Hartsock, with the Criminal Investigations Division, is overseeing the internal investigation, along with two deputy commanders.

“This inquiry will encompass the conduct of current and former DWI officers, as well as probe into the allegations involving the lieutenant,” APD wrote in the news release. “Additionally, it will include an investigation into the Commander of Internal Affairs, who was recently placed on administrative leave.”

Cmdr. Mark Landavazo was put on leave Tuesday. The other officers: Honorio Alba, Joshua Montano, Harvey Johnson and Nelson Ortiz were put on administrative leave shortly after the federal investigation came to light.
