By Sara Atencio-Gonzales, The Paper. – With triple digit temperatures expected across Albuquerque this week, the City is once again rolling out Operation Cooldown, an initiative designed to help residents cool off by activating sprinklers at neighborhood parks.
The Parks and Recreation Department will turn on park sprinklers from 1 to 1:30 p.m. each day from Tuesday, July 28 through Friday, July 31, rotating through a different group of parks each afternoon. The effort is part of the City’s broader summer heat response and is intended to give children and families another free way to stay cool during dangerous heat.

Each day, five different neighborhood parks will have sprinklers activated for 30 minutes. Participating locations include Hyder Park, Holiday Park, Academy Hills Park, Ventana Ranch Park, Singing Arrow Park and several others across Albuquerque. A complete daily schedule is available on the City of Albuquerque Parks & Recreation’s facebook page.
City officials also encourage residents to take advantage of Albuquerque’s public pools and splash pads, which remain open throughout the summer. Children 17 and younger can swim for free on Sundays, children under age 2 always swim free, and select pools offer $1 Swim Nights on Fridays. The City also maintains a list of cooling locations, including community centers, senior centers, libraries, museums, and transit centers for anyone looking to escape the heat.
Residents can find the full Operation Cooldown schedule, splash pad hours, and additional heat safety resources on the City’s Summer Cool Down website.
