A truck towing a travel trailer plunged from an Interstate 40 overpass onto Tramway Boulevard on Tuesday morning, critically injuring at least one person, fire officials said.
Albuquerque Fire Rescue responded to the intersection of Tramway and I-40 at approximately 11:17 a.m. after receiving reports of a significant motor vehicle collision.
The first unit to arrive found a single vehicle and trailer that had fallen from the I-40 bridge. The travel trailer became wedged against the concrete overpass structure, with debris scattered across the roadway below.
Photos from the scene show the mangled RV suspended vertically against the bridge’s support column, with its front end crushed. The truck remained attached to the trailer as it hung precariously from the overpass. Scattered wreckage, including pieces of the vehicle’s exterior, personal belongings and structural debris, littered the pavement beneath the bridge.
Two patients were involved in the crash, one with critical injuries, according to fire officials. Eight AFR units were dispatched to establish treatment, triage and transport operations.
Due to the severity of the damage, one patient required extrication while the other self-extricated, fire officials said. Albuquerque Ambulance transported one patient to a local hospital.
The cause of the accident remains unknown. The Albuquerque Police Department is conducting an investigation.
