In a heartfelt ceremony at its Aug. 4 meeting, the Bernalillo County Board of Commissioners recognized a dedicated team of lifeguards for their swift, coordinated actions that saved the life of a young swimmer at the South Valley Aquatic Center on June 23.
The lifeguards’ quick thinking, teamwork and professionalism were pivotal in rescuing an unresponsive child from the pool. Upon noticing the emergency, Lifeguard Logan Sanchez immediately entered the water to retrieve the child, while Pool Manager Melannie Hernandez swiftly activated emergency protocols and led the team’s coordinated response. Head Lifeguards Edgar Pavia Garcia and Anthony Montoya, along with Lifeguards Joshua Lovato and Japhet Beltran Larios, performed three rounds of CPR and other critical life-saving measures until the child regained consciousness, according to reports.
In addition, Sophia Martinez, Ian Toledo, Lucas Toledo and Xavier Olivares, members of the aquatics team, were also recognized for their preparedness and significant contributions during the emergency.
“These young individuals showed incredible poise and skill in a life-or-death situation,” said Bernalillo County Commissioner Frank Baca (District 2). “Their quick, decisive action saved a life, and it’s a powerful reminder of the everyday heroes who quietly make a difference in our community. I commend their professionalism, courage and commitment to their role in protecting our neighbors.”
