Last week, Bernalillo County celebrated the official grand opening of Fire Station #66, the first new fire station constructed by the county in over 25 years.

Located at the southwest corner of Atrisco Vista Boulevard and Central Avenue SW, the state-of-the-art facility is set to provide crucial fire and emergency services to the rapidly expanding West Side, including the Metropolitan Detention Center.

“For those who live and work here, the need to feel safe and supported is essential. This fire station delivers on that promise,” County Commissioner Frank Baca said.

Spanning approximately 11,475 square feet, Fire Station #66 is now the largest in the county’s fire rescue system. The new station boasts four apparatus bays, 11 bunks and dedicated office and training spaces. Its opening also supports 21 new positions within Bernalillo County Fire Rescue, significantly enhancing emergency response capabilities for the community.

“This part of the county has seen tremendous growth, and our public safety infrastructure is finally catching up. Expanding coverage out here isn’t just smart, it’s necessary,” Deputy County Manager of Public Safety and Fire Chief Greg Perez said.

The $11.5 million project was funded through a combination of Bernalillo County general funds, public safety bonds and grants from the State of New Mexico.
