A northeast Albuquerque home is a “total loss” and the home next door sustained serious damage following an early afternoon explosion that rocked an otherwise quiet residential neighborhood Wednesday.

Albuquerque Fire Rescue was called to the 9400 block of Woodland Ave NE just after 1:30 p.m. and arrived to find “a large incendiary explosion that had lit the house and neighboring house on fire.” While the cause is still under investigation, officials confirmed that they are looking into whether fireworks were being stored on the premise.

At least two persons were injured, including one who is believed to be the homeowner a department spokesperson later said.

The police department’s bomb squad was also activated and investigators from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, which investigates fire and explosion cases, joined local investigators on scene.
