A section of Rio Bravo Boulevard SW will operate with reduced lanes for about five weeks as part of ongoing road improvements, Bernalillo County officials announced Tuesday.

Westbound traffic on Rio Bravo Boulevard from the approach to Second Street through the intersection will be limited to one lane from Tuesday through Feb. 21. The closure will allow construction crews to remove and replace deteriorated concrete at the intersection.

The work is part of the Rio Bravo and Second Street Intersection Project, the latest phase in the reconstruction of Rio Bravo Boulevard.

The broader county project includes widening Rio Bravo Boulevard from four to six travel lanes, adding pedestrian facilities on the north side and Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant improvements to the southside trail. Crews will also rebuild the railroad crossing to accommodate the expanded roadway.

County officials expect the project to be completed by May.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation will separately rebuild the Rio Bravo bridge crossing to match the county’s six-lane configuration. The state and county projects are adjacent but independent of each other.
