The Albuquerque Housing Authority (AHA) is calling for local artists to create vibrant artwork that will beautify three public housing sites in the International District as part of an ambitious neighborhood transformation initiative.
The project, funded by a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Choice Neighborhood Planning Grant, will commission 15 original artwork panels across Wainwright Manor, Grove Apartments and Pennsylvania Apartments. The selected artist or creative group will receive $7,500 to complete the work by September 15.
What sets this initiative apart is its emphasis on resident engagement and cultural representation. The chosen artist must organize at least one community engagement activity at each housing site, ensuring the artwork reflects the voices and aspirations of the people who call these communities home.
The artwork will be installed on outdoor vertical surfaces such as walls and fences, with each panel measuring 4 feet by 4 feet. Artists can use any media or technique, but must deliver the final pieces as high-resolution digital files that AHA will fabricate and install as outdoor panels.
To be considered, applicants must reside in Albuquerque, with preference given to artists from the International District. They must submit an artist statement, portfolio of similar work, and a description of their community engagement approach.
The competitive selection process involves AHA staff, public housing residents, and members of the Choice Neighborhood Steering Committee. Proposals are due by Monday, July 28 at noon.
Artists will be evaluated based on their ability to engage with the community, relevant artistic experience, connection to the International District, and capacity to meet project deliverables.
The artwork is part of the broader International District Choice Neighborhood Transformation Plan, which focuses on revitalizing these three housing sites through comprehensive community development.
Interested artists should submit proposals as a single PDF file to abqchoice@abqha.org. More information about the Choice Neighborhood Plan is available at abqchoice.com.
