The Albuquerque International Sunport has been awarded a $3.66 million federal grant to overhaul Sunport Boulevard, the main roadway leading to New Mexico’s largest airport.

The Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program approved the funding for what officials describe as a crucial infrastructure project that will rehabilitate the heavily traveled corridor connecting Interstate 25 to the airport terminal.

The project involves completely reconstructing the roadway surface between the I-25 interchange and the Sunport Terminal Loop. Workers will mill existing pavement, install new asphalt concrete, and apply an open graded friction course designed to improve vehicle traction and water drainage.

“Sunport Boulevard is a vital corridor that sees thousands of vehicles each day, connecting travelers to flights, family, and opportunity,” said Aviation Director Richard McCurley. “This project ensures that we continue delivering a safe, smooth, and welcoming experience from the moment visitors arrive.”

New Mexico’s entire congressional delegation played a key role in securing the federal funding. Senators Martin Heinrich and Ben Ray Luján, along with Representatives Teresa Leger Fernández, Melanie Stansbury and Gabe Vasquez, advocated for the project.

“When we invest in New Mexico’s airports, we invest in the people who rely on these facilities to do business in our state, create jobs, and contribute to our economy,” Heinrich said in a statement.

The airport issued a request for construction proposals on July 16, with contractor responses due by August 19. Officials expect construction to begin later this year and say they will work to minimize traffic disruptions during the project.

Mayor Tim Keller praised the investment as beneficial for the entire region.

“The Sunport is not only a gateway to our city but also a driver of economic growth and connectivity for the entire region,” he said. “These upgrades to Sunport Boulevard are a smart infrastructure investment that will keep traffic moving safely and efficiently for years to come.”

The Sunport handles more than 5.4 million passengers annually and serves as a critical hub for tourism, business travel and air cargo operations throughout the Southwest. The improved roadway is expected to enhance the travel experience for the thousands of daily users while supporting the airport’s role in the regional economy.

The project represents one of the largest recent infrastructure investments at the airport, addressing long-standing concerns about road conditions on the primary approach to the terminal complex.
