Water Authority crews will reduce traffic lanes at one of Albuquerque’s busiest and most accident-prone intersections this week, affecting thousands of daily commuters and access to major retailers.

The Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority announced that valve replacement work at Central Avenue Southeast and Eubank Boulevard Southeast will require lane restrictions from July 15 through July 18.

During the four-day project, northbound Eubank will be reduced to one lane from south of the intersection with Central to just north of the intersection. Westbound Central Avenue will also be reduced to one lane on the approach to Eubank Southeast.

The work affects an intersection that carries “the most significant density of traffic in the city on a daily basis,” according to traffic analysts.

The intersection has a documented history of serious accidents, with multiple crashes requiring emergency response and extended lane closures in recent years. Past incidents at the intersection have closed lanes “for several hours” during emergency response, according to local reports.

According to the Water Authority, “motorists in the area should expect delays and travel through the work zone slowly and with caution.” For more information, contact Rachel Stone (505-362-9519) or Patti Watson (505-269-9691).

The intersection sits within Albuquerque’s high-accident corridor, where the city experiences “the state’s highest annual rate of major collisions each year,” according to state transportation data.

Work is scheduled to be completed by the end of the day Friday, though the Water Authority notes that all work is weather permitting and subject to change without notice.
