Drivers on I-25 in Albuquerque will experience a significant shift in traffic patterns beginning Saturday, as crews initiate Phase 2 of the “I-25 Improved: Comanche to Montgomery” project.

This marks a major milestone for the three-year, $268 million investment, the largest construction project in New Mexico’s recent history, aimed at enhancing safety and reducing travel times.

The initial phase of the project has been successfully completed, with new pavement now in place on the outside lanes of I-25. Phase 2 will focus on reconstructing the I-25 mainline and bridge sections in the center of the interstate.

Starting Saturday night, northbound and southbound I-25 traffic between Candelaria Road and south of Montgomery Boulevard will be shifted to the newly paved outside lanes to accommodate the upcoming work.

What Drivers Can Expect:

  • Lane Shift: Travel lanes on I-25 will move from the inside to the outside to allow for construction on the inner lanes.
  • Nighttime Closures: To facilitate the lane shift, nighttime lane and ramp closures on I-25 will be necessary, beginning July 12 between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.
  • Daytime Traffic Flow: Once the lane shift is in place, three lanes will be open in each direction on I-25 between Comanche Road and Montgomery Boulevard during daytime hours.
  • Reduced Speed Limit: The speed limit in the work zone has been reduced to 55 mph for the safety of drivers and construction crews.

The project is nearing its one-year milestone in August, with two more years of construction anticipated. Phase 3 is planned for later this year. Drivers are encouraged to sign up for text alerts to stay informed about ongoing closures and traffic impacts.
