District 6 Councilor Nichole Rogers will host her next “Community Conversation” from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday at Flock of Moons Brewing Company to share updates on development projects, policy changes and the upcoming participatory budgeting groundbreaking.
The July 3 event, part of Rogers’ monthly series held at rotating venues across District 6, offers residents a chance to connect directly with their councilor and to hear real-time updates on local initiatives and provide input on city decisions. This month’s agenda includes a recap of the State Fair Tax Increment Development District meeting, proposed changes to the Safe Outdoor Space ordinance, and a preview of the groundbreaking for a community-selected project funded through participatory budgeting.
This month’s meeting is part of Rogers’ ongoing series held at different spots around District 6 or virtually. Wednesday’s gathering takes place at a brewery in the Bricklight District across from UNM. Held on National Beer Run Day, the setting adds a laid-back feel to the civic discussion.
Rogers said the meetings are just to provide regular updates to the community about things that are coming up or happening in the district.
“Tomorrow, we have some big topics to cover,” she said.
According to Rogers, the New Mexico State Fair Tax Increment Development District Board meets in the morning on July 3.
“I’ll be giving folks an update about what happened at that meeting, what I learned, so they know,” she said.
The morning meeting will be led by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and local officials, including Mayor Tim Keller and Rogers. The board will adopt rules covering bylaws, procurement, open meetings, records retention, hiring, a $30,000 communications budget and a meeting schedule.
The clerk/treasurer will report on current and future finances. Presentations will cover the history of Senate Bill 481 and the district’s bond capacity.
Updates will follow on the Master Plan and request-for-proposals process from General Services, along with an introduction from consulting firm Stantec. Secretary of Transportation Ricky Serna will report on property acquisitions authorized by the legislature. State Fair Manager Dan Mourning will share progress on listing some buildings on the New Mexico Historic Register.
Rogers said she will be giving residents updates on the Safe Outdoor Space ordinance to start prepping the community on the changes the City Council is working on.
Rogers said she will share updates on other projects, like the Participatory Budgeting project. The community voted on the winning project in April, and we unveiled it in May.
Now, the groundbreaking is set for Monday, which is super exciting, Rogers said.
The project was where community members decided how to spend $1.5 million in public funds. From over 240 project ideas submitted by residents, the Kathryn-San Mateo Growers’ Market was selected as the winning community project.
Rogers led the effort, encouraging residents — including youth and unhoused people — to submit ideas, form project teams and vote. According to the city, over 1,150 people participated in the vote.
The Growers’ Market project seeks to support local farmers and will include a certified kitchen and an operations manager. The process gave community members hands-on experience and deep involvement in shaping their neighborhood.
