The Albuquerque International Sunport last week added a new commercial airline option for travelers.

Sun Country Airlines now offers flights between Minnesota’s Twin Cities and Albuquerque.

Sun Country Airlines in October announced plans for a new Albuquerque route as well as expanded service to seven other U.S. cities. The seasonal service provides twice-weekly, nonstop flights between Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and Duke City.

Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller said he’s looking forward to new opportunities the airline can provide for the community.

“As our city grows, we’re working to make sure we have accessible, convenient travel opportunities so folks can explore new places and stay connected with loved ones,” Keller said.

Sunport Aviation Department Director Richard McCurley said the addition of a low-cost carrier benefits New Mexico and is in line with the city department’s mission.

“With Sun Country’s commitment to affordable travel, New Mexicans will now have more convenient access to the Twin Cities,” he said. “This option greatly aligns with our mission to serve our residents and overall community.”

Greg Mays, Sun Country’s chief operating officer, said he hopes the new route will also encourage Minnesota residents to plan more trips to the Land of Enchantment.

“We are pleased to add Albuquerque to our route map,” Mays said. “I know Minnesotans will enjoy [New Mexico’s] outdoor beauty, hiking, and all it has to offer, including the arts community in Santa Fe.”
