Bernalillo County Commissioners accept $262,000 grant to add two fire rescue positions

The Bernalillo County Commission voted Sept. 24 to accept a $262,000 grant from the New Mexico Department of Finance and Administration.

According to a press release, the grant will be used by Bernalillo County Fire Rescue to add two firefighter/EMT positions.

During the 2024 New Mexico Legislative Session, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed legislation to provide $24.9 million in grants for an additional 190 firefighter and EMT positions across the state. A total of 59 public entities received funding.

“We are grateful for the support from our state lawmakers in recognizing the need for additional personnel. This grant allows us to focus on building a stronger team without immediately impacting the existing budget,” Bernalillo County Fire Chief Greg Perez said.

The resolution passed by a unanimous vote.

Additionally, Bernalillo County Fire Rescue is now accepting applications for the upcoming training academy starting in early 2025. Applicants must be over 18, have a high school diploma or GED equivalent and must have a valid New Mexico driver’s license. If selected to continue, applicants must pass a series of examinations and an interview process.
