Bernalillo County and the state’s Environment Department teamed up to clean up a “major tire dumpsite” on the Pajarito Mesa southwest of Albuquerque.

And they made a mini documentary about it.

Last year, the state Environmental Department awarded the county’s Planning and Development Services a $371,237 Recycling and Illegal Duming (RAID) grant to address a tire stockpile dumpsite on the mesa, according to a news release from the county. The property โ€” which had been deemed a nuisance โ€” had more than 65,000 tires.

The grant was also used to create the five-minute mini-documentary, which features Pajarito Mesa resident Luz Madonado.

โ€œThere are families out here. There are kids being raised out here,โ€ Maldonado said. โ€œWe appreciate the partnership with Bernalillo County. We appreciate what theyโ€™ve done and what they continue to work for, for our community.โ€

Money for the RAID grant comes from a special revenue fund derived from a fee on motor vehicle registrations.ย
